Air resistance, or drag, makes your car less fuel-efficient, but one Huntsville man says you can harvest it to make a hybrid car use as little gas as possible.
“As this wind turbine is actually turning, it’s actually creating electricity.”
American Wind president Robert Yost has designed the MicroCube — a nine-inch-tall, 3-D-printed wind turbine which he says can create up to a kilowatt of power. Yost believes borrowing the blade design from a jet engine and the lift of a jet wing can provide never-before-seen power from a design this small.
The wind turbine is generating power as a fan blows into it at 7 mph. The generator is providing enough electricity to charge a cell phone.
“Those two properties that we’re using actually allows us to get about 100 rpm for every 1 mph wind speed, and that gets quite a bit of rotation on the generator which then produces the power,” says Yost, who says his inspiration came from the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak. While he claims these turbines could help keep your power on after a natural disaster, he believes the MicroCube can also make hybrid vehicles more fuel efficient.
“On top of the Ford C-Max we’re building a platform to actually mount four wind turbines on top of the car,” says Yost, who believes mounting these on the hood will allow him to travel across the country twice while using as little gas as the car will physically allow, “We’re going to be able to generate up to its maximum, 3 kilowatts, to recharge the batteries as we’re driving down the road.”

Yost is conducting road tests locally, which he will continue for six weeks. He currently is in discussions with a top ten global automobile company in hopes of them using his soon-to-be patented technology.
He is planning his cross-country trip during the summer of 2015.
